Format matters

Which format should you actually use?

Most sites use the wrong format for at least some of their images, and pay for it in load time. The rules are simpler than they look.

WebP for almost everything

WebP files are typically 25 to 35% smaller than an equivalent JPG at the same visual quality, and every browser in current use supports it. If you are choosing today, choose WebP.

JPG for photographs

Still the safest choice for photographs where maximum compatibility matters, such as an image someone will download and open in older software.

PNG only when you need transparency

PNG is lossless, which makes it large. It earns its size for logos, icons and anything needing a transparent background, and wastes it on photographs.

Need something else?

To shrink a file without changing its format, use the image compressor. To change dimensions, use the image resizer.

FAQ

About converting images

What's the difference between JPG and PNG?

JPG uses lossy compression, making it ideal for photographs with smaller file sizes. PNG uses lossless compression and supports transparency, making it better for logos, icons, and graphics with sharp edges.

Does WebP work in all browsers?

Yes, WebP is supported by all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. It offers superior compression compared to both JPG and PNG, making it the best choice for web images.

Will converting my image lose quality?

Converting to PNG is lossless and preserves full quality. Converting to JPG or WebP uses lossy compression, but at 90% quality the difference is virtually imperceptible. You can adjust the quality slider to find your ideal balance.

Can I convert WebP back to JPG or PNG?

Yes! This tool converts in any direction between JPG, PNG, and WebP. Simply upload your WebP image and select JPG or PNG as the output format.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. All conversion happens entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your images never leave your device, making this tool completely private and secure.

Can I convert multiple images at once?

Yes! You can select or drag-and-drop multiple images at once. All images will be converted to your chosen format, and you can download them individually or all at once.
